James Smith founded Trim Tree Training in 2016…

In his own words…

I founded TRIM in February 2016 after already spending more than 10 years working within the arboriculture industry. My passion for the outdoors started at a young age, spending countless hours climbing trees, exploring woodlands and developing a genuine appreciation for the natural environment.

After completing a National Diploma in Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College, I went on to build a successful career carrying out all aspects of tree surgery and arboricultural work. Alongside my practical industry experience, I discovered a real passion for education and helping others develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed within the land-based sector.

Over the years, I have taught and trained aspiring arborists across East Sussex, sharing my knowledge and industry experience with hundreds of learners. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing students progress from complete beginners to qualified professionals working within the industry.

Since establishing TRIM, I have remained committed to continuously developing my own skills and professional knowledge. One of the most significant milestones in my career has been qualifying as an NPTC Assessor. This role has allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of national industry standards, assessment procedures and the competencies required to operate safely and professionally within arboriculture and forestry. Becoming an assessor has not only expanded my own skillset and technical knowledge, but has also enhanced the quality of training I deliver, ensuring learners are fully prepared for both assessment and real-world industry expectations.

Alongside my assessor qualifications, I hold PTLLS and CTLLS teaching qualifications and continue to maintain my Lantra Instructor status, ensuring my training remains current, relevant and aligned with the latest industry best practice.

Now, after 10 successful years of running TRIM, I am incredibly proud of what the business has achieved. My passion for education remains as strong as ever, and I am dedicated to helping the next generation of arborists, forestry workers and land-based professionals gain the qualifications, skills and confidence they need to build successful careers.

Whether you are taking your first steps into the industry, looking to advance your existing qualifications, or simply wanting to learn new practical skills, I look forward to sharing my experience and helping you achieve your goals.
